Assessments
At AKIS, assessment is a crucial part of the learning process. It helps identify students' strengths, areas for improvement, and next steps in their educational journey. Assessments are designed to ensure that students meet learning expectations and achieve high levels of academic success.
Types of Assessment
Formative assessment
Ongoing assessments that occur during lessons. These help teachers understand students' learning needs and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. Strategies include observations, questioning, marking, and providing constructive feedback. Students are also encouraged to assess their work and that of their peers.
Summative assessment
Conducted at the end of a unit of study, or during specific exam periods. These assessments evaluate what students have learned over a period of time. Summative assessments can be internal (set by the school), or external (set by examination boards). Students and parents are informed of the results, which are used to inform future teaching and learning strategies.
Internal assessments
Subject specialists create these assessments based on the specific units of study covered during the school year. Internal assessments diagnose learning needs, monitor progress, and inform teaching strategies.
External assessment
These are standardised exams provided by external examination boards. These allow students' performance to be benchmarked against other local and international schools. Results from external assessments provide an objective measure of student attainment and help in planning future educational provisions.
Data analysis, student progress, and tracking
Teachers and academic leaders regularly analyse assessment data to monitor student progress, identify areas for improvement, and plan interventions.
Data is reviewed at multiple levels: by individual teachers, heads of departments, and school leadership. This ensures that necessary actions are taken to support students in meeting their academic goals.
Student progress is closely monitored to ensure that each student is on track to meet their learning objectives. Regular assessments and data analysis help identify students needing additional support.
Academic targets are set annually based on various factors, including curriculum expectations, past performance, and comparisons with high performing schools.
These targets help guide the teaching and learning process and ensure students work towards achievable and meaningful goals.
Intervention strategies
Interventions are planned based on assessment data to support students who require it. This may include additional classes, tailored teaching strategies, or other forms of support. The effectiveness of interventions is regularly reviewed to ensure they are helping students progress.
Maintaining standards
AKIS uses various quality assurance processes to ensure fair, accurate, and effective assessments. This includes sampling assessments, monitoring the implementation of assessment guidelines, and using external benchmarks to compare standards.
Parents receive at least three reports each academic year. These reports detail student progress, achievements, and areas for further development.
The academic year's final report includes a pass/fail status based on the school’s criteria and is also submitted to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE).
A student’s promotion to the next grade is based on meeting academic expectations, attendance, and other health and learning needs. If a student does not meet the required standards, the school may recommend that the student repeat the academic year.
Collaboration with parents
Parents are invited to at least two parent teacher meetings each year. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss their child's progress, achievements, and areas for further learning. Parents can also contact teachers, or academic leaders at any time to arrange additional meetings.
