Ministry of Education Curriculum
Arabic Language
All students whose mother tongue is Arabic study Arabic as a First Language. We believe that strong Arabic language skills provide an important foundation for academic success, cultural understanding, and future opportunities.
From an early age, students develop confidence and fluency in Modern Standard Arabic through engaging learning experiences that strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Alongside language development, students deepen their appreciation of Arab culture, heritage, and values.
Arabic is taught through a structured and progressive curriculum aligned with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) requirements. Through high-quality teaching, targeted support, and regular assessment, students are encouraged to achieve their full potential while developing pride in their language and cultural identity.
Islamic Studies
We believe that Islamic Studies plays an important role in supporting students’ spiritual, moral, and personal development. Dedicated curriculum time is allocated to Islamic Studies from Foundation Stage through to Year 12, providing a progressive learning journey across all phases of education.
The curriculum is delivered in accordance with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) requirements and focuses on developing students’ understanding of Islamic beliefs, values, practices, and ethics. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning and apply Islamic principles in their daily lives.
Islamic Studies is taught in Arabic for native Arabic speakers and in English for non-native speakers, ensuring that all students can engage meaningfully with the curriculum. Through high-quality teaching and supportive learning experiences, we aim to nurture knowledgeable, responsible, and respectful individuals who contribute positively to their communities.
Qatar History
All students study Qatar History up to Year 9, reflecting our commitment to developing informed, respectful, and culturally aware learners. Following the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) curriculum, students explore Qatar’s history, heritage, and national development through approved learning resources.
Through their studies, students gain a deeper understanding of Qatar’s values, traditions, and achievements, fostering an appreciation of the country in which they live. For non-Qatari students, Qatar History provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the local culture and community, promoting mutual respect and cultural awareness.
Qatar History is taught in Arabic for native Arabic speakers, supporting both subject knowledge and the continued development of Arabic language skills.
Libraries
The AKIS Libraries play a vital role in supporting engaging learning, personal growth, and academic achievement across all phases of the school. They provide welcoming and inclusive spaces where students develop a love of reading, strengthen their research skills, and become confident, responsible users of information.
Our extensive collection includes more than 45,000 books in English, Arabic, and a range of community languages. Resources are carefully selected to support the curriculum, reflect student interests, and celebrate the diversity of our international school community.
Through our partnership with Qatar National Library and access to the Oliver library portal, students and staff benefit from a wide range of digital resources that support reading, research, and independent learning both in school and at home.
AKIS is home to five dedicated libraries, each designed to meet the developmental needs of specific age groups and phases of learning. These spaces provide access to age-appropriate resources, opportunities for inquiry and research, and environments that encourage both collaboration and reflection.
A rich programme of events throughout the year helps foster a vibrant reading culture, while student leadership opportunities, such as the Library Captains programme, encourage learners to contribute positively to their school community and develop valuable leadership skills.
Through these opportunities, our libraries support students in becoming curious, confident, and globally minded learners.
